HOW I BELIEVE TO TEACH
I want to inspire every student, spark their interest in learning, show children that they all can have goals and dreams, and believe that every child can learn. I believe that even though there are different philosophical teaching techniques, I will teach my students a fraction of everything. I believe it is important to teach a part of Idealism, Realism, Pragmatism, and Existentialism. I know I have to address both Analytic thinking and Prophetic thinking to achieve my goal in being able to teach and be an excellent teacher to my students. In order to teach essentials of Literacy, I have to focus on "(1) oral language, (2) concepts about print, (3) phonological awareness, (4) alphabetic principle to include letter names, sounds, and phonics, (5) fluency, (6) vocabulary, (7) comprehension strategies, and (8) writing and spelling to make satisfactory progress in early literacy development" (Morrow & Gambrell, 2011).
ALL CHILDREN LEARN DIFFERENTLY
All the children that I will teach in the future will learn in different ways, and no child is alike in their way of being able to absorb information and learn for their future. I will do my best to include different teaching techniques to reach every student in my class. I will provide lessons and instructions with excitement and creative projects to help each student reach their goal of knowledge. I understand students will learn literacy differently where I have to focus and provide a balanced approach to instruction. I have to pay attention specifically towards how to teach decoding, Phonics knowledge and strategies, and Phonemic awareness. I have to be aware of struggling readers; I can support them by "providing a substantially expanded amount of books and textbooks at appropriate levels of difficulty" (Morrow & Gambrell, 2011), and provide "exemplary Classroom instruction" for those struggling students. I can further accommodate by providing a well laid out classroom design with Literacy centers and either large group or small group instruction centers (Morrow & Gambrell Chapter 17, 2011).
EACH CHILD IS AN UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL AND CAN LEARN
No matter what background my students will be from, and what culture they grew up in, I will not see them any different but equal to be capable of learning anything and everything. I believe that each child is a unique individual and is special in their own way. I also know that each child has different interests and forms specific interests. One such differentiation I have to be aware of is the fact that there will be English Language Learners (ELLs). As a teacher, I can take first steps to identifying the needs of ELLs, and "...identify the various ways in which ELLs differ from one another and from native English speakers" (Morrow & Gambrell, 2011).
LITERACY ENGAGEMENT
I believe that language learning starts with communication. I value the importance of providing engaging stories to my students which can connect to both their personal lives and imaginations. Strategies will include modeling, conversations, including own experiences for discussions, and dramatic play involving art integration (to engage more senses).
MY CLASSROOM AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
I will provide the best classroom and learning environment that I can possibly offer my future students. My classroom will be warm and comforting, with students wanting to spend their time there learning for their future. My classroom will have every student’s creative contribution displayed throughout to let them know that it is not only my classroom, but also theirs. I will provide reading corners and group discussion centers to accommodate all learning opportunities. By doing so, I can use the different centers for several Literacy teaching instructions such as the 5-block schedule "which is divided into five clearly defined instructional time and activity blocks (1) word work, (2) fluency, (3) writing, (4) comprehension strategy instruction, and (5) small-group differentiated reading instruction" (Morrow & Gambrell, 2011).
TEACHING WITH EXCITEMENT
I will teach with the upmost excitement and do my very best in getting all my students attention and spark. I will get them excited to learn with every subject forthcoming. It is important to me to create an environment that is exciting to my students to reach into. With the help of today’s technology, I will do my best in providing my students with the best research and opportunities to see their world. According to Morrow & Gambrell (2011), "Technology supports traditional literacy skills and creates the need for new literacy skills." John Dewey emphasized on the growth of the individual, which can be achieved with the importance of the environment setup that students will be in, and the role of the teacher in student's learning." John Dewey philosophy of education is known as Inquiry Learning.
SHAPING THEIR DREAMS
I will believe in my students and let them know that all their dreams for their future can and will come true if they believe in it strongly and achieve their educational quests. I will reach out to every student and let them know that they need to believe in themselves, no matter what rocks lay in the road, and thus being able to create their dreams and never stop believing that they can do it, for they are their strongest supporter. To reflect back onto the Schema Theory, (people organize everything they know into schemas, or knowledge structures), it is my opportunity to assure students create the needed schemas through differentiated instruction which will enhance their metacognitive learning throughout.
